Our mission

The residency model of medicine, brought to nonprofit law

The baobab shelters, feeds, and gathers community beneath its crown. We are building a legal institution in its image — one that grows lawyers slowly, in service, training them in preventive law so grassroots organizations get the proactive legal care they deserve.

Medicine settled this a century ago: you don't become a doctor by reading about medicine — you become one by treating patients, supervised, for years.

Law never built that bridge — least of all in the nonprofit sector, where budgets are thin and the stakes for communities are high. The Baobab Institute closes that gap. We pair emerging lawyers and law students with the organizations that need counsel, and supervise them closely as they learn to practice preventive law — anticipating legal problems before they become crises — from their first summer to a licensed residency. The organizations get sustained, proactive legal care. The lawyers get the training the profession has needed for a hundred years.

Legal health is public health

An organization's legal wellbeing determines whether it can serve its community at all. We treat it like preventive care.

Prevention beats crisis response

Most legal harm to nonprofits is preventable. We work upstream — checkups, not emergency rooms.

Lawyers are built through practice

You don't become a nonprofit lawyer by reading about it. You become one by doing the work, supervised.

Cultural humility and care are not soft extras — they are core legal competencies we train deliberately.

Communities deserve representation

The organizations holding our communities together deserve counsel that reflects and respects them.

The Institute was founded in 2025 and launched in 2026. We believe every claim we make should survive scrutiny — so here is exactly what exists today, what we are building, and what is still to come.
